About Silk:
Silk known for all of it's beautiful textures and feel, has served as a large part of India's history for centuries.
There are different types of silks, patterns and colours, which are exclusive to specific regions within India.
No two sarees can be alike, thus there are innumerable patterns and diversity.

Where does it all begin?  It starts with the cocoon of the silk worm which is made of a single thread of raw silk from 300 - 900 meters (1,000 - 3,000 feet long).  The fibers are very fine and lustrous.
The silk is traditionally hand woven and hand dyed.  Depending upon the region where the silk is being loomed,
silver or gold threads are woven into the fabric adding even more details to the silk fabric.

With India being one of the worlds largest producers and consumers of silk in the world,
the tradition of wearing silk sarees in marriages by the brides is followed in the southern part of India.
The silk sarees of India are among the living examples of the excellent craftsmanship of the weavers
of the country.

The artistic sense of the Indian weavers doesn't just stop with the striking colours they choose
for the fabrics, but lies within the weaving mastery of their creation of floral  designs, motifs, beautiful textures,
and the durability of their work.  The weaver not only weaves with the silk thread, but with intense feeling
and emotion.
As you can see here at "A Silk Thread" we have been able to transform this exquisite silk sari fabric - these
incredible pieces of art and craftsmanship into lovely bags.
