Welcome to "A Silk Thread".  A fair trade project developed to make these beautiful silk bags available globally, but most importantly to support the creative efforts of some very lovely women in Sri Lanka. 

This Fair Trade project empowers these women by enabling them to develop their business skills, creative talents, and get paid 2-3 times more than they generally would.  

In particular Fair Trade benefits women and gives them new opportunities to prosper.

These women can work directly from their homes allowing them to be with their children and not have to work in unfavorable factory conditions.  

All of these bags are hand made by women from a rural town in Sri Lanka.  A town which was devastated by the Tsunami in 2004, in a country where a civil war has left many families lives in shambles with the loss of family members, their jobs and their homes.  

Your choice of purchasing these bags has directly supported their dreams and efforts in reclaiming and rebuilding their lives and their families lives with dignity.

All of our bags are made from exquisite silk sari fabric. 

No two bags are alike, which adds to their distinct original essence.

"A Silk Thread" works directly with these women ensuring fair wages and working conditions for them.

Thus far, this project has touched the lives of just a small group of women.

Our vision, is that we believe that with the right planning and networking there is a realistic potential to support many more women.

When women in impoverished countries have the opportunity to earn money, they most often use the income to improve the lives of their children.

This results in a better education, healthier food, safer water and improved health care.

All this directly ends the cycle of poverty.
